KENORA – Back in May, the Kenora District Service Board awarded funds to community-led initiatives across the district of Kenora that assist over 1000 children get out of poverty.

The core belief of the KDSB backs all children who are not able to access organized sports, recreation, community activities, and food security because of the lack of publicly supported initiatives to bring low-income families out of poverty.

“The COVID-19 Pandemic continues to impact families and children across our District and creates barriers to active participation. The Board remains committed to ensuring that children and youth in our communities, particularly low-income children and youth, have equal and equitable opportunities to access these enriching programs,” says Barry Baltessen, Board Chair of the KDSB.

The impacts COVID-19 pandemic is vast. As some children in the district struggle to meet the need for a healthy diet due to food insecurity, COVID limited low-income children from participating in recreational programs that exercise their team-building skills through sports and community activities.

In the fall of 2021, The Northwestern Health Unit’s Nutrition on Weekends Program and the Kenora Beaver Brae PASS Program saw an additional need in the district. Therefore, KDSB was able to contribute funding based on that need and then carried forward the remainder of their budget in 2022 to support the CPRRF program.

The total allocation to be distributed in 2022 is $201,290.

In total, the KDSB will be providing funding to thirteen programs throughout the District:
