FORT FRANCES — Environment Canada has issued a tornado watch for the Fort Frances, Emo and Rainy River area.
"This is a potentially life threatening situation," warns the alert issued Sunday evening.
"Be prepared for severe weather. Take cover immediately, if threatening weather approaches."
Isolated tornados, and winds up to 120 kliometres an hour are possible in the late evening and overnight
Ping pong ball-sized hail, potentially growing as large as tennis ball sized is also possible, according to the alert.
In the event of a tornado, or if the tornado watch is escalated to a tornado warning, Environment Canada recommends the following actions:
- Go indoors to a room on the lowest floor, away from outside walls and windows, such as a basement, bathroom, stairwell or interior closet.
- Leave mobile homes, vehicles, tents, trailers and other temporary or free-standing shelter, and move to a strong building if you can.
- As a last resort, lie in a low spot and protect your head from flying debris.
The area is also under a severe thunderstorm warning.
"Lightning kills and injures Canadians every year. Remember, when thunder roars, go indoors!"
Environment Canada urges anyone in the area to monitor alerts and forecasts. To report severe weather, send an email to [email protected].
