A possible blue-green algae bloom has been spotted in Pelican Lake in Sioux Lookout. According to a media release by the Northwestern Health Unit, the Ministry of Environment is waiting for results of a test to confirm if the bloom is blue-green algae, which can be a health risk in large amounts.

The Health Unit said that until the results are known, people should treat it as if it is one. This means that people should to avoid using the water including, drinking it, swimming in it, and using it for bathing or other household purposes.

The health unit said that boiling water doesn’t help and actually may increase toxin levels. It said if people or pets do contact the algae, to wash with soap and water to remove it.

The release said it is recommended to wait at least two weeks after the bloom has disappeared before using the water from the lake again.
