IGNACE — Police are looking for help from the public to piece together the events leading to the death of a local man on Highway 599.
Passing motorists reported a person lying in the northbound lane of the highway north of Ignace early Wednesday morning, according to a media release issued Friday by the Ontario Provincial Police. Emergency services arrived shortly before 6 a.m.
A 48-year-old Ignace man was pronounced dead at the scene.
Officers with the Dryden OPP crime unit are investigating the death alongside the North West region traffic incident team.
Although the incident was initially reported as a collision by Ontario 511, a traveller information service provided by the provincial Ministry of Transportation, an OPP spokesperson said she could not confirm at this stage whether investigators believe a collision occurred.
The only vehicle on site when officers arrived, she said, was that of a passing motorist who had stopped to help.
Police said they are still investigating what happened and they are asking for help from anyone who was in the area that night.
The OPP is asking anyone has information, particularly anyone who was travelling on Highway 599 or has dash camera footage from the area between 10 p.m. Tuesday and 6 a.m. Wednesday to contact police directly at 1-888-310-1122 or anonymously through Crime Stoppers.
