Police say 61-year-old man drowns at July Falls

Incident occurred on Friday afternoon near Pickle Lake.

PICKLE LAKE, Ont. -- Ontario Provincial Police are investigating the suspected drowning of a 61-year-old man at July Falls, near Pickle Lake.

In a release issued on Saturday, police say they received a report on Friday, at about 2 p.m., of an individual who had fallen through the ice. Police and Pickle Lake Ambulance attended the scene and attempted to perform life-saving measures, but were unsuccessful.

Gordon Wassaykeesic, from Mishkeegogamang First Nation, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police remind the public to exericise caution near waterways and that no ice is safe ice.
