Part of Front Street in Sioux Lookout is renamed Valour Way

Part of a busy downtown street in Sioux Lookout will be renamed Valour Way to honour veterans who have served and are still serving in the military.

SIOUX LOOKOUT -- The stretch of a Front Street in front of the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 78 in Sioux Lookout will soon be known as Valour Way.

Council voted unanimously on Wednesday to accept the recommendation to rename a part of the street located in front of the Legion.

Brian MacKinnon, the manager of corporate services and clerk for the municipality, said staff were approached by the Legion earlier this summer about the name change. He said their request was “to further their efforts to recognize and memorialize the many, many veterans from our area who served and continue to serve in the armed forces.”

The name change is for a stretch of Front Street that is less than 100 metres long and affects three buildings including the Legion said MacKinnon. He added that any time a street name change happens, bylaw requires that staff consult with impacted properties. “We did speak with the owner [of an affected address] prior to bringing the report to council. And he advised that he had no concerns with the renaming and the potential impact on his business address,” he said.

While it will take a few weeks for city staff to complete the paper work for the name change, the community can start calling the stretch Valour Way said MacKinnon. He said further discussions will take place with the Legion about new signage.
