RED LAKE – An individual has been safely apprehended and arrested after a “barricaded person situation” near Little Vermilion Lake, according to Ontario Provincial Police.

The standoff at a remote camp north of Red Lake involved an individual with a firearm who had uttered threats, an OPP spokesperson said Monday.

A news release said police received reports at approximately 7:15 a.m. CDT Monday “of an armed individual who had barricaded themselves” at the camp.

Police cordoned off the area and commenced negotiations “in an attempt to resolve the situation peacefully,” the release said.

The OPP deployed emergency response, canine and tactical emergency medical services teams as well as crisis negotiators.

“Our main priority is to resolve the situation safely with minimal impact to the surrounding community,” a news release from the provincial police said.

“The area is no longer cordoned off,” the OPP said in an email shortly before 2 p.m. “Members of the public are able to move freely throughout the area again.”

A Facebook post by the OPP’s North West Region thanked people in the area “for their patience and cooperation during this investigation.”

Little Vermilion Lake is located about 25 km north of Red Lake.
