IGNACE — As part of Canada’s plan for the safe and long-term management of used nuclear waste, the Minister of Energy, Todd Smith, recently visited the township of Ignace.
The Minister spent time discussing the Canadian government’s mission with Ignace Mayor Penny Lucas. The North Waste Management Organization team was also present to meet and learn from other nuclear professionals, collaboratively working towards a plan to protect people and the environment.
The community of Ignace continues to be involved with the site selection process for the storage of used nuclear waste. Lauri Swami, President and CEO of NWMO, believes that, “We are building a future where the safe disposal of nuclear waste is no longer viewed as a problem in need of a solution, but instead a proven model of responsible stewardship.”
The Township of Ignace and council, continue to encourage its residents to learn about the benefits that would result for Ignace, should it be chosen as a safe and long-term management location of used nuclear waste. It promotes ways in which its residents can learn about the benefits of having this project in close proximity to Ignace.
The recent visit by the Honourable Todd Smith, and other partners involved in Canada’s plan for management of used nuclear waste is just one way that the Mayor of Ignace and the township is facilitating this.
