The number of active COVID-19 cases in the Northwestern Health Unit jumped to 36 Wednesday, as the agency reported 10 new cases.

The health unit had reported 11 new cases on Tuesday.

By region, there were 18 active cases in Rainy River, 10 in Kenora, five in Sioux Lookout, and three in Dryden/Red Lake.

One NWHU resident was in hospital with the virus as of Wednesday, unchanged from the previous day.

The rise in the active case count comes a day after NWHU medical officer of health Dr. Kit Young Hoon recommended residents avoid traveling outside of Northwestern Ontario over the holidays, citing uncertainty around the Omicron variant.

The neighbouring Thunder Bay District Health Unit reported nine new cases Wednesday, with the active case count at 66.
