NORTHWESTERN ONTARIO - Some First Nations communities in Northwestern Ontario are benefiting from the latest round of funding for energy related projects.
These programs are some of many that the Independent Electricity System Operator is funding through its Indigenous Energy Support Programs. The agency recently announced $4.8 million going to 47 recipients.
Lac Seul First Nation, Couchiching First Nation, and Bingwi Neyaashi Anishinaabek First Nation are among many in Ontario that that were approved for the Community Energy Champion program which will allow them hire someone to help evaluate energy plans. Funding lasts for 3 years.
“Our community has worked hard to become a green community, and this funding will allow us to move forward, continue implementing renewable energy projects and contribute to the provincial electricity system,” said Ayshaliisa McNally, Community Energy Champion, Bingwi Neyaashi Anishinaabek First Nation in a media release.
Wabigoon Lake Ojibway Nation and Red Rock Indian Band are getting money for the Indigenous Energy Projects program, where they will look at the viability of using solar power and other renewable energy systems in their communities.
