New tech donations to help health-care providers stay fresh

The RBC Foundation donated $20,000 to the Lake of the Woods District Hospital Foundation to support the purchase of a MegaCode Kelly training manikin.

KENORA – Health-care providers at the Lake of the Woods District Hospital (LWDH) will receive some new tech to help keep their skills fresh.

With a $20,000 donation from the RBC Foundation, the Lake of the Woods District Hospital Foundation can purchase a MegaCode Kelly training manikin.

Mira Trebilcock, executive director of Lake of the Woods District Hospital Foundation, said the gift to support the acquisition of MegaCode Kelly marks a pivotal moment for the hospital's commitment to excellence in health-care training.

“With this state-of-the-art simulator, we're revolutionizing staff training, ensuring they are equipped with the highest level of skills and preparedness to handle critical medical situations. It offers realistic, immersive experiences for continuous learning and improvement. With MegaCode Kelly, we are investing in the future of health-care delivery, empowering our team to provide the highest standard of care to patients."

Nurses, nurse practitioners, physicians, respiratory therapists, and students at Lake of the Woods District Hospital will be able to sharpen their skills on the MegaCode Kelly, which will aid them in a variety of pre-hospital emergency simulation scenarios including airway management, IV therapy techniques, CPR, ACLS, NBC, trauma, and bleeding control scenarios.

MegaCode Kelly replaces a 20-year-old, outdated manikin.

“As you can imagine, technology has advanced drastically in 20 years. One of the key differences of this high-fidelity simulator manikin is the realism MegaCode Kelly provides. It is designed to provide a more realistic simulation experience. It features improved anatomical accuracy, lifelike skin texture, and responsive physiological feedback to mimic real patient conditions more closely,” said Trebilcock.

Jennifer Young, clinical educator at LWDH, explained in a release that “by incorporating consistent simulation scenarios available with the MegaCode Kelly, our local instructors can easily integrate simulation into their clinical training, helping learners make and correct their clinical errors without adverse consequences. This is especially important for rural hospitals like LWDH, as we do not have the same volume of critical care scenarios to keep skills sharp.”

Some of the more advanced features include wireless connectivity that will allow educators to control the simulation remotely and gather data for performance analysis. Instructors will be able to adjust specific learning objectives to create realistic training experiences tailored to their student capabilities.

The MegaCode Kelly includes an advanced feedback system that will provide learners with performance metrics, including CPR quality, response times, and decision-making skills, to facilitate effective learning and improvement.
