New exhibit explores a Northwestern Ontario town's rich hockey history

The Museum of Atikokan wants help to identify rinks where photos of hockey games were taken.

ATIKOKAN — The Museum of Atikokan is asking for help putting the finishing touches on its newest exhibit.

Home-Ice Advantage: Stick-Handling Through Atikokan's Rich Hockey History, will open next month.

Curator Patti Nagle has plenty of items to work with, including photos from back in the 1950s, but needs assistance in identifying the rinks some of the photos were taken at.

She said Atikokan, which was a booming mining town at the time, operated no fewer than five outdoor rinks.

"I do have the information on the history of the rinks. It would just be nice to match the history with a photograph."

Nagle has posted a number of these photos on the museum's Facebook page.

She said the exhibit will showcase the important role that hockey has played in the town over the decades.

"I grew up playing hockey, and an exhibit hasn't been done on sports in a really long time. I'm trying to bring a new focus to the museum as well, to bring in a new crowd."

Nagle became curator in June of last year.

She said about half the people who go to the museum each year come from Atikokan, while the rest are visitors.

The new exhibit is scheduled to open on Saturday, Feb. 8.

Leading up to it, the museum is highlighting the contributions of individuals who played key roles in developing hockey over the years.
