Nearly $3M provided for 14 Northern tourism projects

Centre Island South Ltd. is one of 14 Northern Ontario organizations to receive tourism funds from FedNor.

Fourteen tourism projects across Northern Ontario will share in nearly $3 million from Canada’s federal funding agency.

FedNor announced the funds totalling $2,886,971 during National Tourism Week, which is annually observed April 24-30 across the country.

The funds come from FedNor’s core programming, as well as the Tourism Relief Fund, which was outlined in Budget 2021.

A list of the projects and their funding allotments follows:

  • the Township of Sioux Narrows-Nestor Falls will receive $784,800 to build a roof on its outdoor recreational facility and another $154,800 to hire an economic development officer for three years;
  • the City of Thunder Bay will receive $500,000 for its downtown revitalization project;
  • the Thunder Bay Community Economic Development Commission (EDC) will receive $315,515 to complete two waterfront development studies;
  • Crawford's Camp will receive $100,000 to build an all-season lodge;
  • Lac Seul Resort will receive $100,000 to modernize and expand its operations;
  • Centre Island South Ltd. will receive $65,580 to replace the roofs on its lodge and outbuildings;
  • the City of Temiskaming Shores will receive $18,000 toward the development of a pedestrian and cycling bridge over the Wabi River;
  • Old Mission Resort will receive $80,000 to modernize its main lodge;
  • Noelville Family Resort will receive $99,750 to develop new camping lots;
  • the Municipality of French River will receive $36,000 to complete murals on locations throughout the community;
  • the Escarpment Biosphere Conservancy Inc. will receive $225,000 to improve hiking trails in the Manitoulin District;
  • the Town of Smooth Rock Falls will receive $112,326 to develop a waterfront master plan; and
  • the Town of Marathon will receive $450,000 to build amenities for its waterfront area, including a viewing platform, seating and a stairway.
