OTTAWA—On Sunday, Sept. 5, 2022 Transport Minister Alghabra issued a statement to mark the beginning of National Trucking Week 2022 in Canada.
The COVID-19 pandemic highlighted the importance of Canada ensuring the existence of a reliable supply chain in order to support and maintain the basic daily goods and services that all Canadians need.
Minister Alghabra, Minister of Transport, issued the following statement. "The last two years have shown us how important it is to have strong and resilient supply chains that remain strong in the face of unexpected disruptions, such as severe weather or a global pandemic,” stated Alghabra. "Truck drivers play a crucial role in making sure Canadian families get the goods they need on time. Their efforts throughout the COVID-19 pandemic highlighted their essential role in keeping our supply chains moving, from keeping food on our tables, to getting Canadian-made goods to markets across the world,” added Alghabra.
In his announcement, the Minister thanked all truck drivers who work towards making sure Canadian families get the goods and services they need each day. He acknowledged that it is their hard work that is central to keeping the economy strong.
In addition, Alghabra spoke about the issue of labour shortages indicating that this issue was an important key topic of discussion at the government’s National Supply Chain Summit, held earlier this year.
"As our focus turns to recovering from the impacts of the pandemic, our government continues to work with the trucking industry to tackle one of the major challenges facing the sector: labour shortages. These shortages are impacting the trucking industry around the globe, and was an important topic of discussion at our government's National Supply Chain Summit earlier this year,” stated Alghabra.
His statement concluded with his assurance that his Ministry and the government will continue to look for ways to facilitate further discussions and ways to keep working with the trucking industry in the future. Alhgabra stated, "As we move forward, our government will continue engaging and working with the trucking industry from coast to coast to coast to work together to keep our economy strong for Canadians."
