SANDY LAKE FIRST NATION, Ont. – Four Sandy Lake First Nation residents face trafficking and other charges following a search of two homes in the community earlier this month.
On Sept. 6, members of the Nishnawbe Aski Police Service (NAPS) Intelligence Unit, Emergency Response Team, Ontario Provincial Police Community Street Crime Unit, and the Sandy Lake Uniform Detachment Members executed two search warrants in the First Nation community of Sandy Lake under the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act.
During the search of two separate residences officers seized drugs suspected to be Cocaine, Oxycodone, and Hydromorphone. Police also seized three firearms and Canadian Currency.
As a result of the investigation, NAPS reported laying the following charges against four Sandy Lake First Nation residents:
- Miriam Mamakeesic, 45, is charged with trafficking a controlled substance and possession of property obtained by crime
- Billy Jack “BJ” Kakegamick, 45, is charged with trafficking a controlled substance and possession of property obtained by crime
- Sylvian Fiddler, 25, is charged with three counts of possession for the purpose of trafficking
- Carey Fiddler, 46, is charged with three counts of possession for the purpose of trafficking, possession of property obtained by crime, and three counts of careless storage of a firearm
Carey Fiddler was held for bail in Kenora Court on Sept. 7.
Mamakeesic, Kakegamick, and Sylvian Fiddler were each released on an undertaking with conditions, and will appear in court on Nov. 7 in Sandy Lake First Nation.
