THUNDER BAY — A high-ranking Nishnawbe Aski Nation leader is facing an investigation.
Deputy Grand Chief Bobby Narcisse confirmed that a third-party investigation should be underway. He declined to comment due to the investigation.
Narcisse was first elected as a Deputy Grand Chief in 2021, and was then re-elected to another three-year term in 2024.
What appears to be a confidential letter from Grand Chief Alvin Fiddler to the NAN chiefs was obtained and made public by Globe and Mail reporter Willow Fiddler on Tuesday.
According to the letter, Narcisse has been barred from entering any NAN offices or participating in NAN travel for reasons of workplace health and safety but can continue to work remotely, with pay.
The letter does not specify the nature of any allegations against Narcisse, stressing that they have not been independently verified and that Narcisse is entitled to due process. "I cannot comment at this time on the substance of the underlying concerns, because of confidentiality and in order not to prejudice the independent investigation."
NAN officials did not respond to a request for comment.
In May 2023, NAN chiefs voted to remove former Grand Chief Derek Fox, following allegations he breached NAN's code of conduct. At the time, NAN officials suggested the third-party investigation into Fox's conduct had produced recommendations that went beyond removing him from his role.
