KIIWETINOONG – While the country is still trying to grapple with the horrific violence by Damien and Myles Sanderson, NDP Duty Leader Sol Mamakwa took to Twitter to offer a statement on the violent mass stabbing on the James Smith Cree Nation.
“Today our hearts and prayers are with all those connected to James Smith Cree Nation, in what we now call Saskatchewan, as we struggle with the loss of life to so many and accompanying community trauma,” stated Mamakwa. “We send prayers of healing for those who were senselessly killed and injured physically, spiritually, and emotionally by these events.”
In the early morning of Sun. Aug. 4, Damien and Myles Sanderson went on a mass stabbing rampage killing 10 people and injuring 18 before alluding police.
Damien, 31, was found dead on Mon. in a grassy area near a house that was being investigated. RCMP reported that his injuries did not appear to be self-inflicted.
“We also are thinking of all the first responders and health care workers there, as we continue to pray for those who were wounded and for the lives that were lost on the weekend,” said Mamakwa. “In times like these, we remember our teachings and ask for strength from all our relations as we grieve. The creator reminds us that we are all connected and we share the pain and grief of our relatives in Treaty 6 Territory.”
