THUNDER BAY — A Thunder Bay court has issued fines totalling $9,000 to three moose hunters from Southern Ontario in connection with an incident that occurred in October 2021.

The court was told that after the party came upon a moose standing on the roadway in the Petry Road area north of Upsala, two of the hunters fired their high-powered rifles down the roadway at the animal.

Ontario law prohibits firing a gun down, across or from a public road while hunting.

Both men were charged with careless use of a firearm while hunting.

In addition to a total of $8,500 in fines, the two had their hunting licences suspended for four years.

The third member of the party was fined $500 for failing to properly attach a tag to a bull moose.
