EMO — Ontario Provincial Police say a body recovered from the Rainy River has been identified as a missing American man.

In a release issued on Monday, police say on Jan. 11, the Rainy River Detachment was asked by U.S. officials to assist with a missing person investigation. At the time U.S. law enforcement believed the missing person had tried on Dec. 28, 2024, to cross into Canada at a location that was not a port of entry.

The body was found on April 16 and has since been positively identified as 59-year-old Michael Tjosaas.

The cause of death is consistent with drowning and foul play is not suspected.

Fort Frances OPP, the office of the chief coroner and the Ontario forensic pathology service, along with assistance from the OPP Fort Frances crime unit, the OPP forensic identification service and the International Falls Police Department, took part in the investigation.
