RED LAKE – The Red Lake Miners have hired Lee Stone to take on the dual role of coach and general manager.
Stone brings an impressive pedigree to the Superior International Junior Hockey League club, having spent 10 seasons with the Junior B Campbell River Storm in the Vancouver Island Junior Hockey League, where he won three championships and Keystone Cup gold in 2015.
It’s a welcome opportunity, Stone said, in a release issued on Monday by the team.
“My goal has always been to coach at the Junior A level and to take a team to the Centennial Cup. I can’t wait to get started in Red Lake and bring the Bill Salonen Cup back where it belongs,”
Miners president Jason Vinet said Stone brings the right mix of dedication and hard work to the Red Lake bench.
“He has a proven winning record with the Campbell River Storm and is dedicated to the advancement of his players. Lee Stone will be a very big asset to this organization. Our goal is not only to compete and do well on the ice and in the community but to win the SIJHL championship and we feel this hire will help us do that,” Vinet said.
Stone takes over from Kevin Walker, who spent one year with the Miners, leading them to a fifth-place finish with a record of 22-25-5. He left the Storm in February after delivering 373 wins in 518 games, a .766 winning percentage.
No reason was given for the departure.
The Miners won the Bill Salonen Cup in 2022, the first in franchise history.
