ATIKOKAN – A check of a suspicious vehicle in Atikokan has led to an impaired charge being laid.

According to the Ontario Provincial Police, at about 1 a.m. on June 17 an officer observed a vehicle idling in a back alley and upon further investigation it was determined the driver was drinking an alcoholic beverage inside the vehicle.

The driver subsequently failed an approved screening test and was taken into custody, where additional breath testing was conducted.

A 21-year-old man from Fort Frances was charged with one count of impaired operation, alcohol and drugs, and one count of impaired operation, blood alcohol concentration over 80 milligrams per litre.

His vehicle was impounded for seven days and he received a 90-day licence suspension.

The accused was released, with a promise to appear in court in Atikokan on July 31.

From June 27 to July 6, OPP officers will be conducting patrols, waterways and trails to promote safety during Canada Day Week.

It is Newswatch policy not to name people accused of crimes unless it’s likely we will follow the case through to its conclusion in court.
