KASABONIKA LAKE — Nishnawbe Aski police have laid an aggravated assault charge against a 43-year-old Kasabonika Lake First Nation man after what police are calling a “serious assault” in the community over the weekend.

According to a media release issued on Tuesday, the First Nations police service said its officers were called to a home in the remote community, located almost 600 kilometres north of Thunder Bay, in the early morning of Saturday May 10.

Police said a number of people were in the home when an argument started — shortly after one man allegedly attacked another man with a weapon. The victim was first taken to the community’s nursing station before being transported to hospital in Thunder Bay, police said.

They added that the extent of the victim’s injuries is unknown, but they are “not believed to be life threatening.”

Police located a suspect later the same morning and arrested and charged a 43-year-old man with aggravated assault.

Police said he remains in custody in Kenora after a bail hearing on Sunday and has a future court date.

It is Newswatch policy not to name people facing criminal accusations when we are unlikely to follow the case to its conclusion in the courts.
