Kiiwetinoong MPP and NDP Deputy Sol Mamakwa has confirmed he won't be seeking the party's leadership.

A Northwestern Ontario MPP says he won't be pursuing his party's leadership.

Kiiwetinoong NDP MPP Sol Mamakwa, who currently serves as one of the party's deputy leader, posted on social media on Friday that he won't be running to succeed long-time former leader Andrea Horwath.

"Leadership for me is a very serious consideration and my top priority is to continue being a voice for Kiiwetinoong and First Nations people across Ontario," he said in the post.

The leadership post was vacated by Horwath following the party's results in this year's provincial election, when the NDP held onto Official Opposition status but had their seat count fall by seven as Progressive Conservative Leader Doug Ford captured his second consecutive majority mandate.

The registration deadline for the race is Monday.
