Major storm mangles Caliper Lake Provincial Park

After a major thunderstorm, campers at Caliper Lake Provincial Park evacuate as crews evaluate the extent of the damage.

NESTOR FALLSThe aftermath of a brutal super storm has residents of Nestor Falls picking up the pieces of their property as multiple reports of blown-down trees and debris have collapsed onto their homes and vehicles.

Members of the Kenora Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police and the Sioux Narrows-Nestor Falls Fire and Rescue were dispatched to Caliper Lake Provincial Park just after midnight. Police were advised multiple trees had fallen on camper’s vehicles and blocking the road.

The park has been evacuated and no injuries are reported at this time.

The park remains close until the damage can be assessed.

In the town of Nestor Falls, there are several reports of downed trees over power and telephone lines.

This can be extremely dangerous and it is recommended to avoid any electric wires that may be lying on the road.

On Facebook, the Township of Sioux Narrows and Nestor Falls issues a statement.

“An incident involving a super-cell storm occurred in the early morning hours of July 18th, 2022, at Nestor Falls, Ontario. Damages relating to high winds and downed trees were sustained,” the statement reads. “The Fire Service and Ontario Provincial Police are currently responding to Emergency call-outs.”

Resident Brad Ouellet shows the extent of the damage in photos he posted to Facebook with a caption that read, “Tornado Nestor falls lots of damage.”

The photos show several fallen trees that nearly missed several houses, while other trees are firm blanketing on top of the houses. Some trees were completely uprooted from the ground and lying on roads and driveways.

Police recommend that travel in the Nestor Falls area be limited due to multiple trees and wires down.

Further information will be shared as it becomes available.
