KENORA – The Lake of the Woods Hospital has expanded patient capacity for its dialysis unit from six to eight chairs with morning and afternoon treatments, six days per week, according to Charlene Kissick, brand management lead.

To accommodate the expansion, the hospital will increase nursing support for the unit with nurses for every 12-hour shift.

Corinne Coffey, manager of ambulatory services, said “the most important and wonderful part of this expansion is that every one of our patients who was receiving dialysis in Thunder Bay while waiting for a spot closer to home was repatriated back to Kenora.”

In 2021, Lake of the Woods District Hospital opened the dialysis unit on the main floor next to the emergency department. Since then, the unit has moved to its area on the main floor, which made the expansion possible.

Ray Racette, president and chief executive offier, said “it is extremely important for patients, when requiring three dialysis treatments per week, to be close to home and with their families. Expanding patient capacity was a priority in our hospital, and has resulted in improved patient access.”
