THUNDER BAY — A child's play kitchen is being recalled after a toddler died in the U.S.
The play kitchen, which was sold in both Canada and the United States, is being recalled after a child was able to climb through an opening and become entangled in parts of the toy.
According to the Health Canada release, the child was able to get behind the unit and climb through an opening. The 23-month-old became stuck on metal hooks that store some of the kitchen accessories.
Unable to rescue themselves, the child died from strangulation and asphyxia.
The unit was not securely fastened to the wall, creating a gap that allowed the child to climb through and become trapped on the metal hooks.
No other incidents have been reported in the United States.
As of July 30, there have been no reports of injuries or incidents in Canada related to this product.
Those with the toy are advised to stop using the recalled product immediately, remove the original hooks, and contact Backyard Kids for free replacement hooks.
This recall involves the KidKraft Farm-to-Table Model Play Kitchen. The play kitchen is primarily black and light gray with wood-like countertops. It features a wooden horizontal dowel with metal or plastic hooks attached, which hold toy kitchen accessories such as play pots and pans.
Parents and guardians are reminded to ensure that the play kitchens are always securely anchored against a wall using the tip-over prevention kits that were provided with these units. The company will provide new tip-over prevention kits upon request.
The affected product is labelled as the KidKraft Farm to Table Model Play Kitchen, with model number 53411 and UPS numbers 706943534113, 706943010228, and 706943207277. The model number can be found on a sticker on the back of the play kitchen. The UPC is located on the outer packaging/box of the product.
The company reported that 12 units were sold in Canada by Backyard Kids, LLC, and approximately 5,770 units were sold by KidKraft, Inc. in Canada. KidKraft, Inc. is no longer in business.
