KENORA — With National Emergency Preparedness Week in its final days, municipalities and fire departments across the region have been asking everyone to prepare Emergency Preparedness Kits. They want everyone to be ready for any unexpected emergency. But, the City of Kenora is adding an important element to their request.

Kenora households are being asked to include kids in the set up of these kits. In fact, they posted great tips as to what can be added to an Emergency Preparedness Kit made for kids.

What better way to get kids involved in the planning and building of a kit that caters to kids. The municipality talked about the types of emergencies that can happen in the community and how best to be ready for anything.

Their messages stressed the importance of making sure that every family member has a role to play in being prepared for an emergency. They encourage families to grab a back-pack, label it “Emergency Kit” and add items such as the following:

  • First Aid Kit, medication, flashlight
  • Extra basic clothing such as a top, bottoms and socks
  • Toothpaste and tooth brush, hair comb
  • Water, juice, and snacks such as crackers, canned food
  • Can opener
  • Games such as cards, colouring pages, word search puzzles
  • Family Emergency Communications plan with important contact information

Getting everyone ready for an emergency, including the kids in the family is important. The City of Kenora knows that kids have different needs so it reminds residents that by letting kids plan, and build their own Emergency Preparedness Kit, it can help minimize fear and stress, and they too can be better prepared.
