KENORA -- Kenora MP Eric Melillo says he’s backing Scott Aitchison to lead the Conservative Party of Canada ahead of the results of the vote this weekend.
Aitchison, the MP for Parry Sound-Muskoka, is one of five candidates vying for the leadership of the conservatives.
“I think Scott has great qualities to be our leader and Prime Minister. I’ve been proud of the pragmatic policy ideas that he’s brought forward talking about key issues like affordability, like housing. Ensuring that we’re really affirming Canada’s place in the world as well,” said Melillo. “Strong foreign policy issues as well. I was proud to support his campaign and I’m proud of the work that he’s done.”
Melillo said all the candidates bring something to the table, and noted front-runner Pierre Poilievre is turning a lot of heads. “Pierre and Scott have a lot of similarities that message [about unity],” said Melillo. “It’s about unity within our party first and moving forward from that perspective.”
The deadline for party members to get their ballots in was on Sept. 6. The winner will be decided by ranked ballot, with the winning candidate getting more than 50 per cent of the vote. The result will be announced on Saturday at an event in Ottawa.
