KENORA — Dry weather conditions and fire restrictions have led to Kenora considering the possibility of cancelling their Canada Day fireworks.

The city issued an notice on Wednesday, advising residents that the planned fireworks display on July 1 will be cancelled if local fire bans and a restricted fire zone implemented by the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry remains in effect.

"Although disappointing, thank you to everyone for observing the ban on family fireworks. With the restricted fire zone in place, and the dry conditions, the potential of fireworks starting a wildland fire may be too extreme," fire chief David Pratt said in a statement.

The fire restrictions have been in place across the region since June 1, with all outdoor burning prohibited.

An alternate date for fireworks will be chosen later in the summer if the Canada Day show is cancelled, the city said.

A final decision will be made on June 26.
