Indigenous Services Canada release a COVID-19 update

Report of active case counts decreased by 38 per cent from May.

NORTHWEST ONTARIO – Although some might have tossed COVID-19 out with spring; however, the virus hasn’t gone away and learning to live with it might be a little harder for some than others.

With reports surfacing about a new variant that will bring us into to seventh wave, COVID-19 continues to impact communities across the region.

As of July 6, The Northwest Health Unit is showing a total of 135 active cases; however, the majority of those cases are near Sioux Lookout on the reserves with 108 active cases.

The Indigenous Services Canada is monitoring COVID-19 throughout the country including the newest variants of concern BA.4 and BA.5.

In June 2022, the following data was reported from First Nations communities:

  • 590 average daily reported active COVID-19 cases
    • A 38% decrease from May 2022
  • 17 newly reported hospitalizations
    • A 59% decrease from May 2022
  • 3 newly reported deaths
    • A 63% decrease from May 2022

“For the month of June 2022, the average daily reported active case counts decreased by 38% from May 2022. We continue to monitor COVID-19 activity throughout the country including the newest variants of concern BA.4 and BA.5.,” Patty Hajdu on Twitter.
