IGNACE—The Nuclear Waste and Management Organization recently held an information session on the safe containment and isolation of used nuclear fuel for Ignace residents, First Nation and Metis communities.

With Ignace being considered as a possible site for the safe containment and isolation of used nuclear fuels, the municipality continues to encourage its residents to learn and stay informed about this topic.

The municipality stated it wants its residents to, “Continue to learn. Let's make an informed decision, whatever that outcome might be. We the people of Ignace are willing to learn how we might be able to help Canada.”

Barry and Lise Wetelainen, residents of Ignace expressed their views about this topic. “We think that the repository for nuclear waste, would be a great thing for Ignace; improving the economy, revitalizing our little town, bringing new businesses to mention a few advantages.”

The municipality added that they want the community to learn about the benefits of having this project in close proximity of the city, the need for the project, show their support and to spread the word about Canada’s plan.

Since the creation of the Ignace Community Nuclear Liaison Committee, successive Ignace councils, administrations, and community members have participated in the “Learn More” process, including several comprehensive studies.
