IGNACE – She’ll be Mayor Kim Baigrie soon, after several months as interim mayor.
The Ignace township council formally chose Baigrie as its mayor, with no “interim” in front of that title, in a meeting Monday night.
Baigrie, elected to council in 2022, took the reins as interim mayor last spring after the elected mayor abruptly resigned.
Ignace council on Monday endorsed a report recommending a “permanent,” rather than interim, mayor be appointed for the municipality.
Baigrie then won the position in a 3-2 vote with Coun. Jodie Defeo also a candidate.
But Baigrie’s not mayor yet. She still needs to be sworn in and take the oath of office at the next regular council meeting on Feb. 20.
“I was delighted to let my name stand and to accept both the nomination and the permanent mayor’s position for this amazing township,” Baigrie said in a news release.
She said important matters ahead for the municipality and its residents include deciding on “our willingness to potentially host a deep geological repository.”
The Ignace-Wabigoon Lake area is, along with the South Bruce area, on the Nuclear Waste Management Organization’s shortlist for hosting a proposed deep geological repository for spent nuclear fuel. The NWMO is slated to decide on the repository’s location late this year, with construction to begin roughly 10 years later.
