IGNACE – The Township of Ignace is hosting its first open house on the future nuclear waste disposal site the since agreeing to host the deep geological repository project.
Members of the public and other stakeholders are invited to attend the event next month.
The township is offering two sessions – one at 2 p.m. and the other at 6 p.m. – at the curling rink in the Community Recreational Complex on May 13.
The two sessions are set to be identical and will be co-hosted by the Nuclear Waste Management Organization (NWMO) and what the township referred to in a news release issued Thursday as “other experts and professionals in the field.”
The open house will feature a range of information, including introductions and updates from Ignace’s council, the hosting implementation committee, the community engagement committee, the hosting negotiation team, and executive and staff members of the NWMO.
Attendees will have the chance to ask questions and have discussions with the NWMO, Ignace township staff and council members, the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission and Impact Agency of Canada staff as well as representatives of the Loomex Group, a company working on transitional housing and aerodrome studies.
The NWMO chose the Revell site south of Highway 17 between Ignace and Wabigoon Lake as the location for a DGR it wants to build on Nov. 28, 2024.
Ignace township is designated as the host municipality for the DGR, which is to be constructed in the traditional territory of Wabigoon Lake First Nation.
The repository will store spent fuel from the country’s nuclear power plants.
