RED LAKE – The Dryden Ice Dogs are hungry for the second-round sweep.
The top-ranked team heading into the Superior International Junior Hockey League playoffs, the Ice Dogs needed double overtime on Tuesday night, but prevailed 4-3 over the upset-minded Red Lake Miners when Karson Kerbes slipped the puck past Nick Peters at 4:47 of the second extra frame.
The Game 3 win gives Dryden a 3-0 series advantage in the best-of-seven set.
Game 4 goes on Wednesday night.
The Miners led the contest 2-0 after one period, but needed a Nathan Dann goal with 4:04 to go in regulation to force overtime.
It was Dann’s ninth goal of the postseason.
Kayne Pawlick and Justin Gelderland opened the scoring for Red Lake, Pawlick’s goal coming just 42 seconds into the game.
Max Roby got one back for Dryden, the only goal of the second period.
Elias Eisenbarth evened things up 32 seconds into the third and Rylan Oatman pushed the Ice Dogs in front 3-2 with a goal at the 14:38 mark.
Peters made 45 saves in taking the loss. Dryden’s Kellan Mooney stopped 52 of 55 shots he faced.
