RED LAKE — A hunter from southern Ontario has paid a heavy price for hunting unsafely.
Constantino Pereira of Toronto pleaded guilty in Red Lake court to careless use of a firearm, in connection with an incident that occurred in October 2022.
He was fined $8,500 and lost his hunting privileges for two years.
He will also be required to take the hunter education course before being allowed to purchase another licence.
Court was told that conservation officers learned the man was driving on the Chukuni Road, south of Red Lake, when he saw a bull moose standing on the road.
He then discharged his high-powered rifle at the animal while both he and the moose were on the road.
It is illegal in Ontario to shoot from, down, or across a public road while hunting.
