Furry suspect sought after vehicle break-in

A vehicle on a Northwestern Ontario First Nation sustained significant damage when a bear broke into it

KENORA — The Treaty Three Police Service is advising members of the public to keep an eye out for fur-covered intruders after an incident this week on a Kenora-area First Nation.

In a social media post Wednesday, police indicated they have strong reasons to suspect a vehicle was broken into and badly damaged by a bear.

"The suspect is believed to weigh approximately 150 to 200 pounds, and has black hair from head to paw," they wrote. "We are asking for public assistance in reducing incidents of this nature by following Bear Wise safety tips."

For vehicles specifically, the suggestions include:

  • do not leave food or scented items inside your vehicle, including coolers or bags
  • keep windows rolled up, especially overnight or when parked
  • park in well-lit areas when possible
  • if you see a bear near your vehicle, keep a safe distance and do not try to scare it away
  • if a bear becomes aggressive or poses a danger, contact police immediately

T3PS stated that they are investigating the incident, which occurred Monday night, as a case of mischief.

A spokesperson told Newswatch both Shoal Lake #40 and Iskatewizaagegan #39 First Nations have shared concerns about increased bear activity in the communities.

"However, we encourage everyone throughout the Treaty 3 area to practise preventable measures," she said.
