FORT FRANCES -- Fort Frances Fire Rescue is helping to keep residents safe by sharing fire safety tips.

Fire crews want families to know exactly what to do in case there is a fire inside the home.

If there is smoke, make sure to crawl and teach your children to crawl low and go. In a fire, smoke and poisonous air are more harmful than actual flames. If you stay low to the ground you will breathe less smoke as smoke naturally rises up.

Make sure to feel the doors before opening them. If a door is encountered on the way to an exit, feel the doorknob for heat before going through.

If it's not hot, brace yourself against the door and open it slightly. If you feel air pressure or a hot draft, close the door immediately and proceed to the next exit.

Fire crews say it's important to check for emergency exits and stairwells. Follow the emergency directions and avoid using an elevator.

Lastly, get out and stay out.

Stay outside and call 911. Fire crews stress that you should never re-enter a burning home or building.

Remember fire safety starts with you.
