Former MP for Kenora-Rainy River, John Reid, passes away

John Reid, the former Member of Parliament for Kenora Rainy-River from 1965-1985, passed away in Ottawa on Aug. 25.

KENORA -- John Reid, the former Member of Parliament for Kenora-Rainy River, has passed away.

Reid represented the riding, which has since been dissolved with parts in both Kenora and Thunder Bay-Rainy River ridings, from 1965 until 1984.

Among his accomplishments in Parliament was working on the bill which would become Access to Information Act. 

Reid was appointed as Canada's 3rd Information Commissioner from 1998 until 2006 and was honoured with the Distinguished Service Award by the Canadian Association of Former Parliamentarians in 2002.

Reid passed away in Ottawa on Aug. 25 after fighting cancer for five years. He was 85 years old. 

A funeral for Reid will take place on Wednesday in Ottawa.
