The Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry – Thunder Bay Ignace District advised residents on Tuesday evening that a Flood Watch is in effect for the district.
Residents in Ignace, Upsala, Raith, Kashabowie, Shebandowan, Armstrong and surrounding areas should keep a close watch on upcoming weather forecasts and local weather conditions.
Residents should also exercise caution around less travelled roads, lakes, rivers and areas of high runoff potential.
According to a media release, the ministry is closely monitoring the weather and developing watershed conditions.
The low-pressure system moving into Northwestern Ontario is bringing rainfall across the district with a potential of 50 to 80 millimetres. Some areas may also receive significant thunderstorms that will bring additional rainfall amounts.
Conditions are expected to last for the next 24 hours and may include winds reaching up to 70 km per hour.
High-intensity and/or significant amounts of rainfall can lead to increased runoff, streamflow and flooding of low-lying areas and water pooling over roads.
Anyone travelling should be cautious of reduced visibility and potential hazards from water overtopping roads. Flying debris from high winds can also be a hazard.
The release said the Flood Watch will last until Thursday at noon.
