NORTH SPIRIT LAKE FIRST NATION – Fire has destroyed the band office at North Spirit Lake.
Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding a fire that took place early Thursday morning at the North Spirit Lake band office.
Nishnawbe Aski Police Service officers working out of the North Spirit Lake Detachment received a call for service regarding a structural fire in the community just before 3:40 a.m.
They observed a fire at the band office and learned of another structural fire in the community.
Police arrived on scene to an abandoned home completely engulfed in flames on Airport Road.
Both buildings are a total loss, but no injuries have been reported.
A Facebook post by a resident on Thursday said first that the band office was on fire and then that there was “no more NSL band office,” and shared photos of the blaze.
“This is a huge loss for the community as most of the programs are administered from the building,” Kiiwetinoong MPP Sol Mamakwa said in a Facebook post Thursday morning.
North Spirit Lake is a remote First Nation community of about 400 located north of Red Lake.
