Extreme cold warnings issued for Red Lake, Sioux Lookout, Far North areas

Wind chill values are expected to drop to -40 at times this week, though it could be closer to -50 for some areas in the Far North.

A frigid blast of winter weather is on the way for the Red Lake, Sioux Lookout and Far North areas of the region.

Environment Canada has issued a series of extreme cold warnings for several areas in the northern portion of Northwestern Ontario, forecasting wind chill values approaching and dipping below -40.

The Red Lake and Sioux Lookout areas are expected to see wind chill values near -40 throughout the week, though temperatures are expected to moderate during the daytime hours to bring some relief.

Many Far North areas can likely expect even colder temperatures, with wind chill values around -45. For Sandy Lake, Eabametoong, Weagamow Lake and Deer Lake, the wind chill is forecasted to drop to between -45 and -50 this week.
