EAR FALLS -- This month, the people of Ear Falls will see the return of Winterfest.

From March 24 to 27 there will be activities happening all around town. There will be a curling tournament, box sled races, dog sled rides, fireworks, and many more.

The last time Winterfest was held in Ear Falls was in 2019, before the COVID-19 pandemic hit. In 2021, a virtual Winterfest was held in its place. Online activities such as a scavenger hunt and contests were put on for families.

Prior to 2019, Winterfest was on hiatus for a few years as a new recreation director was needed in Ear Falls. Michelle Hiscox has since taken on the role of Economic Development Officer and was a big part of bringing back the festival.

“People are excited that something is finally happening,” says Hiscox.

Some returning favourites from Winterfest’s past are the pie baking contest, chili cookoff and crafts for the kids; and for the first time ever, Borealis Dog Sled Rides will be in attendance.

“It’s continued to grow each year since brought it back. It’s fun to see more people get involved every year,” says Mayor Kevin Kahoot.

In light of the recent changes to the provincial COVID restrictions, people in the community will be able to participate in all the activities without needing a vaccine passport.

“It’s great news that we can get out and all be together again at another Winterfest,” says Joanne Langlais, the returning leader of the pie baking contest.

Langlais has been in charge of the pie baking contest at Winterfest in past years. People sign up and bake a pie to be entered into a judged contest. She has always seen great participation from the community. There will also be a cookie and cupcake baking contest this year for the kids to join.

Winterfest is one of many festivals and activities that Ear Falls puts on. With the COVID restrictions lightening, the community is looking forward to the coming events of this year.

“What we are trying to do is make Ear Falls a ‘mini destination,” says Kahoot.
