DRYDEN—Mayor Greg Wilson, on behalf of Dryden City Council, “proclaimed the year 2022 as the Year of the Garden”. In his declaration he stated that it is, “In celebration of the contribution of gardens and gardening to the development of our county, our municipality and the lives of our citizens, in terms of health, quality of life, and environmental challenges”.
Mayor Wilson’s proclamation further stated that, “The Saturday before Father’s Day, National Garden Day, June 18, in 2022, be recognized as Garden Day in the City of Dryden as a legacy of Canada’s Year of the Garden 2022.
This is as a result of the Communities in Bloom, and the “Fleurons du Quebec”, in collaboration with the Canadian Garden Council, inviting all municipalities to celebrate the “Year of the Garden 2022”, which in turn is celebrating the Centennial of Canada’s horticultural sector.
Many citizens of Ontario and municipality leaders have long recognized the high degree in which gardens and gardening contribute not only to the quality of life of their municipality’s but also to their climate action goals. They facilitate the creation of safe and healthy places where people can come together in what the proclamation describes as “the spirit of inclusivity and reconciliation”.
Dryden’s Mayor also spoke about the Year of the Garden “highlighting and celebrating the important contribution of gardeners, our local gardening organizations, horticultural professionals and local horticultural businesses which contribute to garden culture and experience of our municipality”.
