KENORA – The Kenora District Service Board will provide funding for six programs through the 'Reaching Home' federal program.

Chief administrative officer Henry Wall stated in a release that the federal program is a cornerstone to addressing affordable housing in every community within the Kenora district.

The six funded projects will run from April 1 to March 31, 2026.

“Through its 2024-26 investment, we can provide tenant support services within supportive housing, rental supplements that allow people to remain in their homes, peer support to connect individuals with essential services, increasing access to appropriate, safe, and affordable housing options, and support transitional housing programming for those who have experienced domestic violence,” said Wall.

The supportive housing initiative, Nahnahda-Wee-ee-Waywin, in Sioux Lookout received the largest share of the grant. Nahnahda-Wee-ee-Waywin provides counselling, support, advocacy, public education and crisis intervention to all victims and survivors of sexual assault and sexual abuse. They were granted $550,000.

Saakate House, a women’s shelter in Kenora, was the next biggest grant of $266,022.

The four other organizations are New Starts for Women Inc. Ten Sisters, Red Lake: Child and Youth Worker ($145,1440, Canadian Mental Health Association-Kenora Branch: Rental Supplement Program & Peer Support ($75,000), Sioux Lookout Food Bank: Food Security ($49,200), and Kenora Association for Community Living: Home of My Own Fit Up ($64,834).

“Reaching Home allows for tailored, front-line supports and programming to take place that have an immense positive impact on those in need,” said Wall.
