Dryden council looks at applying site plan control for proposed hotel

A site plan agreement between Dryden Hotel Group Ltd. and the city was discussed at this week's meeting.

DRYDEN — The preliminary process for a new hotel in the city is continuing.

A proposed 76-room hotel by Wyndham Hotels & Resorts, under the franchise name Microtel, at 325 Government Street between Dingwall Ford and RONA was the topic of discussion at Monday’s Dryden  committee of the whole meeting.

Dryden chief building official Pam Skillen recommended that the council proceed with a site plan agreement between Dryden Hotel Group Ltd. and the city.

A site plan control agreement is governed under the Provincial Planning Act and is a prerequisite to an application for a building permit. The agreement also ensures that commercial and industrial build designs are compliant in accordance with the city’s zoning by-laws and building codes, including fire and emergency services, landscaping, and grading and drainage plans.

Skillen notes that in order for this project to move forward council will need to approve the agreement, which will allow for a building permit to be issued to Dryden Hotel Group Ltd. once Skillen reviews all architectural and engineering design documentation.

Skillen states that there’s no exact timeline for the project at this point.

"I think this is a great thing and a great opportunity for our city," Coun. Ritchie Noel said. “I only see good things with having another hotel here, especially on that particular location. It’s so needed.”

Council is set to vote on the by-law at their meeting on Feb. 27.
