Cochenour Arena closed for repairs

Cochenour Arena will be closed for at least four to six weeks.
Red Lake

RED LAKE -- A local Red Lake arena has been temporarily closed to the public for lengthy repairs.

In a notice posted Tuesday, Dec. 7, the Municipality of Red Lake is advising residents about the temporary closure of the Cochenour Arena effective immediately.

"A catastrophic failure was discovered by Cimco Refrigeration," officials reported in the notice. "The ice plant chiller in which the brine tubes within the chiller have failed, therefore causing ammonia to enter the brine system.

As a result of this and the associated safety concerns, Cimco Refrigeration has deemed the ice plant inoperable and has advised that the arena should be shut down.

Due to the ammonia, closure of the arena is important for safety of residents, arena users, and municipal staff.

The arena is expected to be closed for a minimum of four to six weeks.

Municipal staff are working with the Township of Ear Falls on available ice times in Ear Falls once its arena is operational.

Residents will be updated as information comes available.

Alternatively, once the ice is established at the Market Pavilion this may be an option as well for practices, games and programming.
