SIOUX NARROWS-NESTOR FALLS—The Township of Sioux Narrows-Nestor Falls reported a major storm had gone through the community late Sunday night, July 17.
As a result, it was reported that Caliper Lake Provincial Park, located just south of Nestor Falls is out of service. Kenora OPP reported that they and the Sioux Narrows-Nestor Falls Fire and Rescue were dispatched to Caliper Lake Provincial Park after a report of what was being described as a “significant weather event” had occurred. This resulted in trees down on campers, cars and blocking the road.
Consequently, the park was evacuated and it was reported that thankfully no injuries were reported at the time.
On July 18, 2022 Sioux Narrows-Nestor Falls Emergency provided a public notification update stating that, “Clean up activities continue after a strong straight line wind storm travelled through the community of Nestor Falls early on the morning of July 18th, 2022. Power remains out at the time of writing. Hydro One, Ontario Provincial Police, Ministry of Northern Development, Mines, Natural Resources/Ontario Parks, Fire Rescue Services, municipal personnel and volunteers have been on the ground all day and continue their efforts.”
Their update also reported that there is significant property damages and downed trees along the pathway of the storm, and that there are no known reports of injuries to persons. However, the Park will remain closed until further notice.
It was stated that throughout this time, everyone responded to provide support and volunteers cam together to help generously.
In response to this significant storm, Minister Greg Rickford’s office released a statement, the evening of July 18, 2022, regarding the tornado in Sioux Narrows-Nestor Falls.
Rickford’s statement reads as follows: “Since hearing reports of tornado activity near Sioux Narrows-Nestor Falls, I have been in constant communication with local leaders and government officials to initiate supports. We are employing a whole of government approach to ensure community members have the resources they need. We are thankful that no injuries have been reported at this time and appreciate the tireless efforts of Hydro One and emergency responders. I want to thank neighbouring communities who have volunteered to support those affected. We will continue to monitor the situation and provide updates as they become available. We want those in the affected areas, and the families that have been impacted, to know that we have their backs during this difficult time,” said Rickford.
The Township of Sioux Narrows-Nestor Falls continues to work their way through the aftermath of this storm and as anyone who may be experiencing an emergency to call 911.
