KENORA—The Municipal Emergency Control Group and City Roads patrol continues to monitor the rising water levels throughout the City of Kenora.

Significant water level increases over the past 24 hours have magnified the concern with rising water levels on urban roads.

As a result, the Municipal Emergency Control Group, issued this statement. “Given the rapidly changing state and the expected rising lake and creek levels, the city is advising that anyone with residences on the Sedesky Road, Wildwood Drive, West Bay Road and Second West Bay Road should be monitoring their homes and the possibility of flooding in their areas. Citizens should closely monitor the water levels on roads they travel in these areas, as the watch could be escalated to a recommended evacuation or evacuation order at any time.”

The city added that as lake levels continue to rise, roads crews are responding to numerous other roads issues. They are asking for the public’s assistance with reporting flooding or rising water levels in the city. Residents are asked to email [email protected] to report water that is at concerning levels or flooded roads/areas. They may also call City Hall at 807-467-2000, Monday to Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. to report the concerns.

The Municipal Emergency Control Group stated that, “Anyone living in flood plain should be prepared for the water levels to increase. Lake of the Woods Control Board anticipates water levels to increase 15 to 21 centimetres over the next week on Lake of the Woods. While works continue on the existing closed roads in the evacuated area north of the bypass, the city is concerned with the volume of vehicles travelling on these closed roads. Movement on these roads is creating additional damage and delaying the opening of the roads as maintenance needs to be completed prior to reopening. We are urging the public to refrain from using the roads that are closed so that we may conduct the necessary repairs and reopen them as soon as the works can be completed.”

The city also informed residents that sandbags continue to be available for residents at Fire Station 1 and residents who require these to protect their homes in areas not already evacuated should act quickly to ensure they continue to have road access.

The city has established an area on the city’s website at evacuation updates where alerts can be sent to you directly if you subscribe for the flooding alert. Please register so we may send direct email alerts to you should you wish to receive. Click the subscribe button on the link provided.

Residents will continue to receive updates through the local media and the city’s social media pages and city website.
