Second-year Sioux Lookout Bombers were outshot, but very competitive in their first ever appearance at the national Junior A championship in Oakville, Ont.

OAKVILLE, Ont. — Jack Osmond was able to keep all but one Winkler Flyers player at bay on Thursday, as the Sioux Lookout Bombers opened their first trip to the Centennial Cup in Oakville, Ont.

Unfortunately, the one player he couldn't stop was probably the most dangerous player in the Manitoba lineup.

Dalton Andrew, who led the Manitoba Junior Hockey League with 43 goals and 82 points, scored four times in the tournament opener and the Flyers went on to double up the Bombers 4-2.

Andrew scored once in the first to open the scoring, gave the Flyers a 2-1 lead at 6:50 of the second period just 28 seconds after Owen Riffel had scored to even the game at a goal apiece, and Andrew added two more in the third, both goals giving Winkler — a team making its first appearance since 1992 at the Centennial Cup — a two-goal lead at the time.

Trevor Sanderson also scored for the Bombers, cutting the Winkler lead to 3-2 five minutes into the third.

Osmond, the Superior International Junior Hockey League goaltender of the year, stopped 44 of 48 shots. Malachi Klassen faced 19 shots in the Winkler net, making 17 saves.

In other opening day action, Collingwood takes on Calgary at 4 p.m. and Miramichi plays Melfort at 7:30 p.m.

Sioux Lookout's next game is Saturday at 7:30 p.m. against the host Oakville Blades. Winkler battles Melfort at noon on Saturday.
