KENORA -- Residents in Kenora living north of the CPR line and who get their water from the municipal water system are under a boil water advisory.
The City of Kenora issued the advisory on Tuesday after a major watermain break in the city.
The city is asking anyone under the advisory to boil water for at least one minute and letting it cool before using it.
According to the Northwestern Health Unit website, in order to make the water safe for activities such as drinking, brushing teeth, making infant formula, washing fruits and vegetables, and making ice cubes, “you must bring it to a rapid rolling boil for at least one minute.”
The health unit added “[people] should throw out ice cubes made previously, disinfect the ice cube trays, and make new ice using boiled, cooled water.”
Boiling water can kill any bacteria that could cause illness, said the health unit.
It also said that water filtration devices do not make water safe to drink, as the water still needs to be boiled.
The city said the advisory will remain in effect until further notice and it recommends people contact a public health inspector at the Northwestern Health Unit in Kenora, at 807-468-3147 or 1-800-830-5978, for more information.
